How to Power Through That Midday “Slump”

Do you often feel tired or just generally “fed up” by the time mid-afternoon rolls around? Are you ashamed at your fatigue at work, and feel like you should have more energy and cognitive focus?

You’re not alone, and the good news is that there’s a few simple things you can do to set yourself up for a fully-charged day…without the gittery anxiousness that simply hitting caffeine can bring.

Kiki’s Top 5 Strategies for Powering Through A Full Day’s Work

1. Balance your blood sugar levels after eating.

A great way to do this is to start at the source – the meal itself! Does your plate have adequate amounts of fibre, protein, and healthy fats? Those are key components to ensure you don’t “crash” after work. Legumes like lentils and chickpeas are great because they meet both the fibre and protein element, and a dressing like olive oil (a nutritious monounsaturated fat) will keep you satiated and thriving long after your lunch break.

2. Swap your coffee for a green juice.

A vegetable based cold-pressed juice like Liquid Plumber (which contains: romaine, celery, kale, chard, cucumber, lemon, & parsley) helps to maintain a healthy alkalinity in your body and prevent it from becoming too acidic – which can result in a host of issues such as fatigue, stiff joints, and digestive problems. PS: coffee is acidic.

3. Uplift with aromatherapy.

Using an energizing blend of essential oils like grapefruit, lemon, and peppermint can not only uplift your mood and spirit, but can even combat otherwise debilitating symptoms like headaches and nausea. All it takes is putting a small diffuser on your desk and BOOM you’re space is set up for productive happiness all day long.

4. Get some sun.

I know – this can be a tricky one in an office setting…especially during the winter months! With that said, even just 10 minutes to soak up some rays midday can have an immensely profound impact on your energy levels as well as supporting optimal biorhythms so that you can fall into a deep and restorative sleep at night. Go “run a quick errand” and face the sun!

5. Take breaks!

This one is as obvious as it is underrated. In order to optimize what’s known as your ultradian rhythm, which refers to your balance of activity and rest – you need to take breaks! When all is in fine working order, you’ll enjoy 90 to 120-minute bursts of focus and productivity followed by approximately 15 minutes of rest. In other words, there’s a reason you get the “urge” to get up and go to the bathroom after a couple of hours of work…even if you don’t really need to pee (sorry to be explicit!) – it’s your body nudging you to take a break so that it can “reset”. So enjoy the rest and “detox” your brain for more sustainable energy and optimal cognitive function throughout the day.
